Existing Drug Found to Reduce Brain Tissue Loss in Patients with Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by progressive memory loss due to the formation of Amyloid plaques in the brain. A lab in Singapore has successfully engineered these plaques in the brains of fruit flies, worms, and zebrafish to test the efficacy of lithium. Lithium is currently used to treat some psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder. When lithium was given to the insects with the brain plaques, their life span was significantly extended. These results indicate that lithium could potentially be used in the future as an Alzheimer’s treatment.
